The main purpose of this paper is to show the usefulness of the concept of analogy to explain the semantic patterns of modern and contemporary lyric poetry. Beyond the narrow use of analogy in formal logic, it works with a wide and interdisciplinary concept (that aims to encompass the fields of anthropology, rhetoric and literary theory), and makes an attempt to characterize the most important features of this phenomenon when it occurs in lyric poem. According to the oppinion of several poets of 19th and 20th centuries, this text also suggests that analogy, since Romanticism, has a distinctive value in the semantics and pragmatics of poem as a method to give an objective account of the poetic contents, in correspondence with many other devices like the practice of irony.
