In this article we reflect on two key foundational ideas that should be built up throughout primary education in order to place upper grade students in a comfortable position to understand what is going on a chemical change. First of all, we justify the election of such key ideas in reference to the existing curricular framework and the idea of learning progression. Next, we consider how to work and develop them based on the evolution of students’ ideas and models.
