This paper presents a phonetic characterization of Basque seseo by means of the
acoustic analysis of the bilingual corpus ESCA (Iribar & Isasi, 2008). The first
three spectral peaks of the sibilant realizations of 15 informants are studied, both in Spanish (seseants and canonicals) and Basque. The work shows the acoustic
characteristics of the two types of sibilants found (dorsoalveolar [s] and
apicoalveolar [s1] in both languages, as well as their inter and intralinguistic
relationship. The possible existence of two subtypes of apicoalveolar, more or less
retracted, is also suggested. In general, the phonetic realization of seseo
corresponds to the realization of the dorsoalveolar // phoneme in Basque.
