After a brief introduction on how female stereotypes were shaped within early cinema and still persist to this day, we offer a selection of excerpts from films that deal with figures such as witches, vampires and gorgona.
Starting with a piece of the legendary and groundbreaking film on the subject, Häxan- Witchcraft Through the Ages (1922) by Danish filmmaker Benjamin Christensen, we will be reviewing some of the most remarkable examples of female figures of evil, using contributions from filmmakers in an attempt to cover as much as possible of the history of cinema. In short, a sort of Top Ten celluloid witches with an unmistakable aroma of sulfur.
