Las Meninas és, sens dubte, una obra mestra i, tanmateix, el seu tema no és ni èpic, ni mitològic, ni aparatós: es tracta d'un retrat de grup informal, fet al que sembla l'estudi de l'artista. Per una banda, sembla una instantània fotogràfica; per l'altra, és pintura cortesana representativa. Potser és aquesta tensió entre forma i contingut el que ens fascina.
