This work focuses on a little-studied structure of Spanish formed by the definite article el heading embedded clauses headed by the complementizer que. Even though the article is not compulsory, we defend that this category triggers some semantic and syntactic consequences related to the article itself. For concreteness, the article can be inserted in non-assertive contexts where the information of the clause is already known in the Common Ground. Concerning the syntax, the article takes the CP as its complement, yielding an additional layer in the structure. This fact will originate some consequences regarding the extraction of complements, among other facts.
