The overabundance of plurals in a situation of ongoing linguistic change: the case of Ghomara (north-western Morocco)

The aim of this article is to analyse the variation and profusion of plurals in Ghomara Arabic, a rural variety spoken in northwestern Morocco, within the broader context of ongoing linguistic change, within the context of ongoing linguistic change. Based on a study of plurals extracted from a corpus of over 22 hours, it was found that the declining plural suffix -an and internal plurals with a single vowel change are the forms that exhibit overabundance and restructuring. Consequently, the tendency to restructure or use a double plural marker and more regular forms -either internal or with the suffix -in or -at- is confirmed in Ghomara Arabic.
