Les universitats modernes poden considerar-se com a institucions amb tres missions: oferir educació professional, recerca i formació científica, i educació liberal. L’argument principal de l’article és que l’educació liberal, definida com el desenvolupament de l’estudiant com a persona íntegra, complementa l’educació professional i científica, i mereix més atenció donades les preocupacions actuals sobre els estudiants i les societats. Es presenta una breu història de l’educació liberal i dels seminaris sobre grans llibres com una manera d’oferir aquest tipus d’educació, abordant qüestions pràctiques i educatives sobre la selecció de textos i el paper del docent. Finalment, s’ofereix un exemple de text que podria llegir-se en el marc d’aquests seminaris: Where Angels Fear to Tread, d’E.M. Forster.
