The Portuguese historian Manuel Loff points out in this article the main lines of Portugal contemporary history. The author emphasizes the roll of writers, journalists and politicians and shows specially the importance of cultural and political reviews in the evolution of Portuguese ideas and politics during the 19th and 20th centuries.
