Main Article Content
An approach to the evolution of the abbey of Montserrat under the Franco regime offering an interpretative synthesis of the books and articles published by the available witnesses. It explains the factors of the evolution of the apparent friendship of Abbot Escarré with General Franco towards the break with the dictatorship in the sixties and first half of the seventies of the twentieth century with the declarations in Le Monde of Abbot Escarré, his exile, the banishment to Cuixà of the monks who wanted to modify the community life and the subsequent positions of the abbots Gabriel Brasó and Cassià Just. The role of Montserrat in the preservation and renewal of the Catalan identity in the face of the Franco regime gave great relevance to the events that caused the banishment of Abbot Escarré, the only ecclesiastical authority who publicly censured the dictatorship after the civil war.
