Catalan Romantic Historiography and its influence on the historian of the 20th century. The case of Peter the Ceremonious (1319-1387)

Main Article Content

Gerard Puig Gavarró

The study focuses on the construction of the political discourse and the image of King Peter the Ceremonious (1319-1387) that carries out the 19th century Catalan
romantic historiography, with historians such as Prosper and Antoni de Bofarull, and above all, Víctor Balaguer. This Catalanist or nationalist historiography greatly influences prestigious Catalan historians of the 20th century, such as Ferran Soldevila or Ramon d’Abadal, who draw a distorted image of King Peter, full of negativity and dark tones. These traditional historiographical interpretations of the Ceremonious king with his characteristic dagger make difficult to approach the figure of the monarch as the axis of the medieval Catalan political system.
