The main aim of The Catholic participation of the workers? movement in Barcelona
(1946-1978) was to highlight the importance of the workers? movement during Franco?s dictatorship
and the first years of the political transition as well as to evaluate the Catholic working
activists? contribution to trade unions during that period of time. Therefore, we learn the
way in which such a Catholic contribution affected the workers? movement as a whole and which were its consequences not only in trade unions, but also in politics and inside the
Catholic church itself. The relationship between the apostolic workers? movements such as
JOC, HOAC and ACO and other movements like Comunitats Cristianes Populars and Cristians
pel Socialisme with the archbishops of that time were sometimes difficult and controversial, a
fact which caused that many militants gave up their faith. In terms of trade unions and political
parties, the participation of Catholics in the workers? movement prevented the revival of
anticlericalism and the consolidation of Catholic trade unions. Some of its most relevant contributions
were educational activities and women?s social promotion.
