The history of Catalan Geology before 1870 is studied. This is the time of pioneers
in which courses of Geology begin in Spain (1766), undertaken by the Real Academia de
Ciencies. An outstanding figure in this initial moment is Josep Comes Bonells (a physician?).
Later on follow the world known academicians: Caries de Gimbernat (1760-1834);
Francesc de Bolós Germà (1773-1884), who dicovered the vulcanism of the Olot region;
Fructuós Plans Pujol (1832-1880). Agustí Yánez Girona (1780-1885), Llorenç Preses Puig
(1811-1875), mathematician and cristallographer, and Josep Llobet i Vall-Ilosera (1769-1862), whose academic formation was made in France; the contribution of all these researchers
is carefully analyzed.
