The Word of the Mute: the Combination of Humor and the Fantastic in Julio Ramón Ribeyro’s «La insignia» and «El libro en blanco»

The name of Julio Ramón Ribeyro is usually linked to a highly realist work, which  may hide the fact that the Peruvian writer started and, in a sense, finished writing fantastic stories. Although the style of his work is characterized by the avoidance of any kind of experimentalism, his approach to fantasy does not hide the ideological and existential instability of his generation. Two of these stories, «La insignia» and «El libro en blanco», more than 40 years apart in their creation, are connected due to a synchronization in ironic coding, the same that places his work as one of the few examples of the combination of the humor and the fantastic in 20th-century literature.
