The objective of this article is to analyze the relationships between Indians and black people in the Amazon in the second half of the 19th century, specifically in the Trombetas River region, marked by the strong presence of indigenous people and mocambeiras communities. Based on official documents, travelers reports, and newspapers of the time, we analyze the strategies created by the Indians and black people of that region to escape the control policies of the Brazilian Empire. Thus, despite many divergences, these groups were able to establish alliances, involving compadrazgo relations, protection against missionary and armed troops, as well as an intense commercial relationship.
