In Brazil, it is widely believed that the nation was formed within the process of independence, which started in 1822. Within this context, all social movements, which took place in Brazil during the 1820-40 decades, (such as The Cabanagem), are seen as independentist revolts that were quickly suffocated by the Portuguese empire. However, in the case of the Amazon region this national identity feeling took shape much later and in a different manner from that of the rest of the Brazilian territory.
