From the violent city to the sustainable city?: critical analysis from the sustainable urban development of Medellín, Colombia 1913-2015

From the notion of sustainable urban development, understood as a dynamic and historic process that has evolved over time, and that points to a progressive improvement of the quality of human life, through the interplay of pillars, both social, ecological, political and economic; a critical analysis of the city of Medellín, Colombia, in a period of approximately one hundred years is made. Addressed from this perspective, three key moments. The first of these, concerning the industrial boom and the functional planning of the city (1913-1950), the second, a period of socio-political crisis product of the empowerment of the violence and drug trafficking in the city (1951-1989), and the third, concerning the change of paradigm from a city violent until his identification at the global level as "sustainable city" (1990-2015). Finally, is discussed briefly on the sustainable development in the urban evolution of Medellín and its main challenges.
