This article aims to provide a first look at the flu pandemic of 1918-1920 in Osona from a historical perspective. By studying thirteen municipalities in the area, we have been able to quantify the local impact of the “Spanish” flu and examine the social and institutional response to the pandemic, with particular emphasis on the role of the Church. This case study, which contributes to knowledge of the Spanish flu in Catalonia, draws on sources including the Civil Registry, municipal archives, the Archive and Episcopal Library of Vic, and the archives of the Osona region. We hope that our study will serve to complement existing knowledge of this global phenomenon.
