Recent historiography has portrayed the bishop and the abbot Oliba as a man of deep religious conviction. But was this the cause that led him to enter religious life (becoming a monk and ceasing to be a count) or there were secular reasons? In order to clarify this question we have to contextualize the personal character of Oliba within the social environment that he inhabited and, in particular, his awkward status as a count without an actual geographic county.
