This article discusses the familiar influence on the educational mobility of black graduate students. The reports presented are part of a PhD research in Social Psychology developed at the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo (PUC-SP), which investigated the trajectories of blacks in postgraduate studies. The analysis of the reports allows reflections that offer elements that broaden the discussion on the theme of ethnic-racial relations, family and education. Respondents emphasize the importance of family support for the achievement of academic life projects. We also identified that the parents' reduced level of education did not prevent them from accompanying, guiding and contributing to the length of their children's studies. Since childhood, the interviewees have been living with narratives about racism and social inequalities in the family environment and outside it.
