This article offers a socioconstructionist reading of the novel Maluco, by the Uruguayan writer Napoleon Baccino Ponce de Leon. The book can be seen as an expression of the New Historical Novel in Latin America. I argue that intersubjectivity is the key feature in building a different and more appropriate literary critique of the historical novel in Latin America. I also attempt to update and renew the importance of the narrator's identity and experience in the construction of reality, and to show that fiction is a real option for the invention of intersubjective realities.
