The present paper intends to critically compare the prospective scenarios of social control of the romances 1984, by George Orwell, Brave New World, by Aldous Hux-ley and Fahrenheit 451, by Ray Brandbury, also taking in consideration the interpretation of contemporaneity made by Byung-Chul Han. It is perceived that the loss of political and social categories belonging to a people of Western culture and, therefore, democratic, cor-rupts the very lives of today's citizens. The overused technology, something present in all three romances, is perceived by Byung-Chul Han as usurping the ideals built by the State. It is up to the academy to propose the urgent rescue of these categories, so that we break with the social control established in the face of plurality, critical thinking and difference, characteristics responsible for allowing the West itself to reveal itself.
