The idea of European Citizenship is something more than the old premodern idea: independently of your particular identity, the universal dimension can always be participated directly. The paradox is that today, when people speak precisely about global citizenship, this legacy is in danger. At present, the demand of a universal community coexists with the defense of particular identities threatened by the global dynamic of the capital. We will examine how the relationship between cosmopolitan identity and national identity is more complicated and intrincate of what people usually think.
