Women’s participation in the protection of cultural heritage was very limited until they joined university courses on conservation. However, the new trend is towards gender parity in this field, especially in the movable heritage field, where female professionals are more common than men.
Nevertheless the role of women in new areas for conservation of the recently defined «intangible heritage» is particularly interesting. International bodies stress women’s importance in the transfer and safeguarding of this cultural heritage, which is very difficult to protect. They help to guarantee its continuity for the future.
