First sighting of a Baird’s Sandpiper calidris bairdii in the
Balearic Islands. On 8th October 2011 two local ornithologists, Maties rebassa and Lalo Ventoso, identified a juvenile Baird’s Sandpiper Calidris bairdii in a shallow pond in front of the Prat de Sant Jordi waterworks in Mallorca. the bird was in company of a small group of Little Stint Calidris minuta and Dunlin Calidris alpina and was confiding. it remained in the same place for at least four days, being last observed on 12th October. Subject to the observation being accepted by the rarities committee, it will be the first for the Balearic islands.
