The present study emphasizes the active dimension. of sleep. Sleep is considered to be a basic motivational process that impels subject to sleep in a cyclic and recurrent manner: The sleep-wake cycle is to be regarded as a circadian rhythm due to its duration, which is twenty-four hours approximately. Two types of sleep are undertaken in this work (slow and paradoxical); electrophalographic peculiarities of both types, and in each of the stages in. slow sleep are described. Then, the analysis of ontogenetic and filogenetic characteristics of the sleep-wake cycle is presented. Finally, a concise revision of the disorders having to do with sleep is done. The disorders are to be grouped in three categories: disorders in the beginning and maintenence of sleep, disorders caused by excesive somnolence, and other disorders related to sleep.
