“Going to serve in Figueres” or female domestic work in the 1930s and 1940s

Erika Serna Coba
In the 1930s and 1940s, female domestic service in the city of Figueres accounted for just over two percent of the population. They are invisible women, mostly young and from the Alt Empordà, whose work as internal employees within wealthy families meant very cheap labor with few labour rights who carried out all the domestic tasks.
