Local government and social representativeness in Castelló d’Empúries in mid sixteenth century

This article approaches the profile of social groups who had access to municipal institutions and positions in mid sixteenth century Castelló d’Empúries. The occupations of men elected by sortition in 1541 compared with the professional structure of the town in mid sixteenth century shows that local institutions were controlled by a minority composed by lawyers, notaries, merchants and artisans linked to drapery and tannery.
