Nos encontramos ante una obra en la que su autora, Ellen Meiksins Wood, se dedica a combatir los planteamientos filosófico-políticos de una pléyade de autores pertenecientes a la corriente posmarxista. Originalmente escrito con el título de “The Retreat from class: A New ‘True’ Socialism”, el libro pretende ser una trinchera desde la cual resistir la ofensiva intelectual que, apartándose del marxismo durante los primeros estertores del socialismo realmente existente, acabó repudiando la aspiración socialista y descreyendo de cualquier proyecto de emancipación universal.
