Theory, Sensitivity, Production of Readers

Main Article Content

Guido Herzovich
Like many other common concepts, “theory” seems both unavoidable and hard to pinpoint. Seeking to contribute to an understanding of its historical emergence, this note offers a set of reflections on some of the key contexts that gave it currency, like the constitution of literature as an autonomous field in university curricula and the rapprochement between avant-garde practices and institutions. These stem either from a dialogue with insights by well-known theorists like Paul de Man, Hal Foster, Roland Barthes and Jorge Panesi, or from personal experience. Rather than a set of texts, or even practices, theory can be productively discussed as a historical regime for the production of readers, linked to the massification of universities and to current demands in cultural consumption.
