The present text examines the elementary metaphors deployed in “Sermão da Sexagésima”, a sermon preached in 1655 by Father Antonio Vieira. The analysis of the metaphorical operation of important elements present in the sermon helps to understand it as part of the rhetoric-theological framework to which Vieira belonged. The article thus highlights the Aristotelian conceptualization carried out by 16th century Iberian letters in their representation practices, as well as the paradigmatic use of analogy and similitude in the combination of signs. Equally important is the relation between metaphors configured in the sermon to extend the effectiveness of the discourse to the pathos of the audience.
