En aquest assaig es passa revista als principals moments de la integració europea des dels anys 1970 fins a la signatura del Tractat de Maastricht. Aquesta periodització serveix per demostrar que els resultats adquirits els anys 1990 poden interpretar-se més com a punt d'arribada dels desafiaments sorgits els 1970 que no pas com a programa de cara al nou ordre internacional que es va imposar després del final de la Guerra Freda.

Biografia de l'autor/a

Maria Elena Cavallaro, Libera Università Internazionale degli Studi Sociali Guido Carli

María Elena Cavallaro és professora titular d'Història de les Relacions Internacionals en el Departament de Ciència Política de la Università Guido Carli. Va obtenir el seu doctorat a la Universitat de Bolonya. Ha estat professora visitant en el Centre d'Estudis Mediterranis de la Universitat de Nova York i al Santander Scholar a St. Antony’s College, Oxford. Els seus principals interessos de recerca són: la integració europea del sud d'Europa en els anys 1970 i 1980; el socialisme europeu en una perspectiva transnacional; la història de la Comissió Europea i les polítiques dels partits de dreta radical en una perspectiva comparada. Entre les seves últimes publicacions es troba Rethinking democratization in Spain, Greece and Portugal (amb K. Kornetis), Palgrave MacMillan, Basingstoke 2019.
