En este ensayo se reflexiona sobre Los derrotados, una novela del escritor colombiano Pablo Montoya. La obra gira en torno a la figura de Francisco José de Caldas, un científico que ha trascendido como prócer de la Independencia colombiana. Tomando como puntos de partida la filosofía de la historia y diversos estudios sobre novela histórica, se analiza el proyecto ético y estético de Los derrotados, así como su relación con el pasado y el presente de la violencia colombiana.
