First Timothy serves to demonstrate how Paulinism had to evolve in view of newsocial and political situations that were confronting the churches. Paul was nolonger there, but the author of this letter wants to follow in his wake. His writingresponds to a situation that was growing in Asia Minor during the last third of thefirst century: an imperial theology that increasingly demanded an adhesion thatwas not only external but also of inner awareness. For First Timothy, this adhesionmust only be given to God, and his mediator is not a temporary civil authority butChrist himself.
