Between 1954 and 1955, at Torrette di Mercogliano, near Avellino, a milestone was found still in situ. Now is preserved in the garden of the ex Carcere Borbonico of Avellino. On the milestone, made using a stone already summarily carved to make a statue of a woman, there are two inscriptions carved at different times. The first, with the name of the emperor Julian, is dated between 361 and 363, the second, which mentions Valentinianus II, Theodosius and Arcadius, dates between 383 and 392. The numeral indications placed on both sides of the milestone indicate that the stone was located four miles from Avellino and three miles from another place, corresponding to today’s Monteforte Irpino, along the road that connected Abellinum with Neapolis, through Avella and Nola.
