Treball portuari, mercaderies globals i desenvolupament d’habilitats materials: un estudi del magatzem d’ivori al port de Londres i la seva representació, c. 1860-1968

Aquest article analitza el paper i la representació del treball als magatzems portuaris en les cadenes globals de mercaderies entre finals del segle XIX i el segle XX. El focus se centra en la planta d’ivori del port de Londres, situada al moll de St. Katherine (construït el 1860 i clausurat el 1968), i especialment en els treballadors de magatzem i els agents comercials que preparaven l’ivori per al mercat, així com en el departament de publicitat del port, que promocionava la seva tasca mitjançant fotografies d’encàrrec i articles de premsa. Com a primer estudi extens dedicat als magatzems d’ivori (tant a Londres com en altres llocs), aquest cas fa llum sobre una part poc estudiada del procés de mercantilització global de l’ivori i mostra l’impacte del comerç internacional en la mà d’obra local a través de les seves habilitats materials i els coneixements especialitzats. La recerca acostuma a abordar aquest tema des del punt de vista de la manufactura, però les habilitats materials, el coneixement tècnic i l’estratègia comercial també van ser fonamentals en l’emmagatzematge i el comerç portuaris, afegint valor a una de les matèries primeres més preuades del segle XIX.
