In the “Guerra dels Segadors” (Reapers’
War), the Catalan Republic was threatened by Castile. To guarantee
French support, Louis XIII was proclaimed Count of Barcelona,
turning Catalonia into a protectorate. We analyse some health
aspects of Louis XIII, such as his childhood illnesses or the long
lasting intestinal disease that finally ended his life (intestinal
tuberculosis vs Crohn’s disease), also commenting on the rite of
the royal touch of scrofula.
