Traducción inmanente vs traducción trascendente (o cómo traducir la metafísica : J.-L. Marion vs A. Badiou)

On the basis of a Latin-French translation of Descartes’ Regulae by French thinker Jean-Luc Marion, we establish a new theoretical framework from where to think about philosophical translations: the history of metaphysics. What is the influence of the history of metaphysics in this translation of Descartes? What decisions does the translator make when dealing with the difficulties involved in this philosophical translation? From a position that is almost the opposite to the one adopted by Jean-Luc Marion, we find on the other hand an extremely interesting traductological piece of work made by also French thinker Alain Badiou, i. e. the translation of Plato’s Republic. An analysis and comparison of these two philosophical translations, as well as of the traductology derived from them, provides us with the grounds to introduce two new concepts in translation studies: “immanent translation” (Descartes’ text as translated by J. L. Marion) and “transcendent translation” (Plato’s dialogue as translated by A. Badiou).
