Refashioning Le Horla: Mediatic Transposition to the Language of Comics

The fantastic has recently been the object of a variety of strategies for its re-signification. Due to new technologies, the genre has found a new path through an old artifice: the image. The mediatic transposition of a literary text to the multimodal language of comics gives new life to canonic texts. According to Boutin (2012), the language of comics brings together multiple modes so that «to read comics is necessarily to face a narrative message of certain complexity and much denser than it might look at first glance». This paper examines the means used in the mediatic transposition of literature to comics, to recreate the suspense present in the monomodal text and to transform the reader into a co-producer of a new text. To do this, it examines an excerpt of Le Horla d'après l'œuvre de Guy de Maupassant (2014) by Guillaume Sorel.
