The incorporation of women into railway work dates back to the second half of the 19th century. The job of level crossing guard was demanding and poorly paid. It reduced operating costs for railway companies while supplementing the income of families connected to the railway world. This article recovers from oblivion the names of around one hundred women who held this occupation in the Girona region, both on standard-gauge railway lines and on narrow-gauge tracks.
