The following is analysis of the outer urban area of Granada during Moorish times, above all during the Nasrí period (XIII-XV th), in wich a study is made of the development of systems of irrigation and the society which sustained these systems. It will show that the avaible arable land, together with methods of irrigation (all the land included in this analysis is subject to irrigation), underwent changes which reflected the changes suffered by contemporany society. These were different system to distribute water: namely the clan system (in its broad sense), the topographic system, and the buy-sell system of allotted times. Irrigation was connected as much to social structures as to islamic culture itself. For instance, allotted times for irrigation for some acequias were organised around the Muslim prayer schedule.
